Story of the World: The Middle Ages (Mapping & Supplement)
Story of the World Vol. 2 : The Middle Ages is the second book in a series of 4 student readers that take you through the timeline of history from ancient to modern times. Commonly used in the classical education model, our family started using SOTW in 2025. It allows the whole family (preschool-grade 5) to learn together in a group setting and we supplement what we are reading with activity pages and the Timeline of Books.
We loved using Story of the World last year for our history studies. It was one of the most enjoyable and low stress experiences. I am so excited to move on to using Story of the World Volume 2: The Middle Ages for this upcoming year.
I’ve been working hard this summer to put together a chapter mapping and supplement for this 2nd Volume. If you’re looking for a mapping of Story of the World Volume 1: Ancient Times you can find it HERE.
What is a Chapter Mapping?
Across this site you will often come across “chapter mapping” as a term I will use to describe a document or spreadsheet that takes each chapter of a book and lays it out in an orderly fashion. Essentially, it’s a list of all the chapters in a book, kind of like a table of contents, that I then pair with additional information and supplemental materials and references. The end result is a resource that makes it easier for you to teach through the book and keep track of your progress. Plus it can include additional activities and resources all in one place.

Reading Plan and Pacing
I find it helpful to look at the amount of material we have to cover each year and think of it more as a pace to keep rather than a lesson to check off on a schedule. Honestly, sticking to a set schedule can stress me out, but if I goal to read a certain number of chapters each month, then I feel like we have flexibility to live life even if that means we miss a day here of there.
There are 42 chapters divided into 105 sections in the Story of the World Volume 2: The Middle Ages student reader. Use the chart below to help you stay on pace with your reading goals.
The first, 16 weeks is a common length for a semester (two – 8 week quarters) which makes a typical school year 32 weeks (be sure to check your state’s requirements). The 35 and 42 weeks are added to show what it would look like to do a chapter a week or 3 sections (days) per week because they divide out evenly.
| Weeks to Finish | Chapters/Week | Sections/Week |
| 16 | 2.6 | 6.5 |
| 24 | 1.75 | 4.3 |
| 32 | 1.3 | 3.3 |
| 35 | 1.2 | 3.0 |
| 42 | 1.0 | 2.5 |
How I Use the Chapter Mapping
I print off the chapter mapping and supplement document and cross the chapters off as we finish them. You may find it helpful to mark where you’d like to be by the end of a month or semester so you can track your progress toward that goal.
