Story of the World: Ancient Times (Mapping & Supplement)

When our family began using Story of the World, I knew I wanted to find a way to supplement the curriculum and integrate it into our other study on Ancient History. After hours of working through each of the books and sources that we had I finally put together a chapter mapping and supplement spreadsheet that contained (almost) everything I wanted to use for that first year of SOTW.

What is a Chapter Mapping?

Across this site you will often come across “chapter mapping” as a term I will use to describe a document or spreadsheet that takes each chapter of a book and lays it out in an orderly fashion. Essentially, it’s a list of all the chapters in a book, kind of like a table of contents, that I then pair with additional information and supplemental materials and references. The end result is a resource that makes it easier for you to teach through the book and keep track of your progress. Plus it can include additional activities and resources all in one place.

My hope is that making this resource available to you, will allow you to better understand how the characters and events in ancient history relate to each other and progress along a timeline.

Story of the World Volume 1 : Ancient Times

The main book, which creates the spine of my chapter mapping, is the first volume in the Story of the World. This 4 volume collection covers the span of history, and begins with the earliest nomadic peoples. In our homeschool I use the student text (reader) along with the student pages. There are additional books and resources available with Story of the World that I do not use, but I have included them below for your reference.

Suggested Resources

I purchased the student pages as a PDF download which allows me to easily print copies for all my students. We do not use every page in this book, but I find the maps and worksheets helpful.

Reading Plan and Pacing

There are 42 chapters divided into 96 sections in the Story of the World Volume 1: Ancient Times student reader.  Use the chart below to help you stay on pace with your reading goals.

The first, 16 weeks is a common length of a semester (two – 8 week quarters) which makes a typical school year 32 weeks (be sure to check your state’s requirements). The final, 42 weeks is added to show what it would look like to do a chapter a week. This book lays out a lot more evenly that Volume 2! However, if you choose to integrate with the Illustrated Family Bible you will need to plan accordingly.

How I Use the Chapter Mapping

I print off the chapter mapping and supplement document and cross the chapters off as we finish them. You may find it helpful to mark where you’d like to be by the end of a month or semester so you can track your progress toward that goal.

I have created a second mapping of this volume which includes an integrated timeline with the Bible. It’s a super cool resource that allows you to see (and study) secular and Bible characters intermingled in the real timeline. You can find that mapping and all the resources on my post about the Ancient History & Bible Integrated Timeline.
